Sedentary lives, that is, people sitting around and not moving for the bulk of their life routine, are a health hazard:

Research has shown approximately 25 percent to 35 percent of American adults are inactive, Blair said, meaning that they have sedentary jobs, no regular physical activity program and are generally inactive around the house or yard. “This amounts to 40 million to 50 million people exposed to the hazard of inactivity,” Blair said in an interview. “Given that these individuals are doubling their risk of developing numerous health conditions compared with those who are even moderately active and fit, we’re looking at a major public health problem.”

I always find it amazing that simply using our bodies keeps them working, much like any other machine. There is something destructive about disuse.

I once joked that there were no fat New Yorkers, because to be a legit New Yorker, you’re walking everywhere, standing on the subway, forgetting (or not being able to afford) to eat meals, and probably live in a walk-up apartment. You can’t help but get exercise here. But, like anywhere, it’s easy to become a homebody. There is just too much internet to explore, why go outside?

If I can recommend anything, it’s talking a walk with some classical music playing, or, if you live in an area rural enough that you can get away from city noise, a walk without any music at all. It’s a motile meditation. (note: I have to take my own advice)
